BEIJING (AP) ? China's first female astronaut and two other crew members emerged smiling from a capsule that returned safely to Earth on Friday from a 13-day mission to an orbiting module that is a prototype for a future space station.

The Shenzhou 9 parachuted to a landing on the grasslands of the country's sprawling Inner Mongolia region at about 10 a.m. (0200 GMT). China declared the first manned mission to the Tiangong 1 module ? the space program's longest and most challenging yet ? a major stride ahead for the country's ambitious space program.

About an hour later, mission commander and veteran astronaut Jing Haipeng, 45, emerged from the capsule, followed by crew mates Liu Wang, 43, and 33-year-old Liu Yang, China's first female astronaut.

The three, all experienced air force pilots, were lifted on to folding chairs and appeared in good health. They smiled, waved, chatted and saluted as state television ran live footage from the landing site.

"Tiangong 1, our home in space, was comfortable and pleasant. We're very proud of our nation," Liu Yang told national broadcaster CCTV.

Space program commander, Gen. Chang Wanchuan, declared the astronauts in good health and declared the mission "completely successful."

He was followed by Premier Wen Jiabao, who said the mission marked "absolutely important progress" for the space program.

The mission had included both remote control and piloted dockings with the module and extensive medical monitoring of the astronauts as part of preparations for manning a permanent space station.

China's next goals include another manned mission to the module originally scheduled for later this year but which may be delayed depending on an evaluation of the Shenzhou 9 mission and the condition of the Tiangong 1. China has been extremely cautious and methodical in its manned missions, with more than three years passing since the previous one, and all four have been relatively problem-free.

Chen Shanguang, director for the Chinese Astronaut Research and Training Center, told a news conference that preparations and selection of astronauts were already under way for the Shenzhou 10 mission.

Tiangong 1 is due to be retired in a few years and replaced with a permanent space station around 2020 that will weigh about 60 tons, slightly smaller than NASA's Skylab of the 1970s and about one-sixth the size of the 16-nation International Space Station that China was barred from participating in, largely on objections from the United States. Possible future missions could include sending a rover to the moon, possibly followed by a manned lunar mission. Launched June 16 from the Jiuquan center on the edge of the Gobi desert in northern China, Shenzhou 9 is the latest success for China's manned space program that launched its first astronaut, Yang Liwei, into space in 2003, making China just the third nation after Russia and the U.S. to achieve that feat. China would also be the third country after the United States and Russia to send independently maintained space stations into orbit.

Earlier in the week, a spokeswoman said China spent 20 billion yuan ($3.1 billion) on its space program between 1992 and 2005 ? a rare admission for a program with close links to the secretive military. By the time the next Shenzhou mission is completed, Beijing will have spent an additional 19 billion yuan ($3 billion), the spokeswoman said.

Wang Zhaoyao, director of China's manned space program office, said the program mirrors the rising global status of China.

"For any country, for any people, a space program is indispensable," Wang said.

A toughened crosshatch of carbon-based molecules is all that stands between plants and their total destruction at the hands of an array of microbes and fungi. Called lignin, the compound enables redwoods to tower and woody herbs to resist rot. As a result, lignin is the second-most abundant biological compound on the planet?and the bane of would-be biofuel-makers everywhere, blocking their best efforts to make fuels from the inedible parts of plants. It is also the reason for the vast deposits of coal laid down millions of years ago.

Now a new genomic analysis suggests why Earth significantly slowed its coal-making processes roughly 300 million years ago?mushrooms evolved the ability to break down lignin. "These white rot fungi are major decomposers of wood and the only organism that achieves substantial degradation of lignin," explains mycologist David Hibbett of Clark University in Massachusetts, who led the research published in Science on June 29.

By comparing 12 newly sequenced genomes of mushroom fungi with 19 existing genomes, the researchers determined that an ancestral white rot fungi (Agaricomycetes) first evolved the ability to break down lignin. The scientists then used so-called "molecular clock analysis"?a dating technique based on the hypothesis that genes accumulate mutations at a relatively regular rate like trees form rings that record their growth. Such an analysis suggests that an ancestral white rot fungi developed this lignin-degrading ability roughly 290 million years ago, a conclusion backed by comparison with the appearance in the fossil record of three other types of fungi (although the first definitive white rot fossil does not appear until roughly 260 million years ago) and the subsequent expansion and refinement of the arsenal of enzymes employed. The 60-million-year-long Carboniferous period?when the bulk of the world's coal deposits were laid down and atmospheric CO2 levels declined?ended roughly 300 million years ago.

The coincidental timing suggests the appearance of this ability to break down lignin helped slow the massive burial of organic carbon via nondegraded tree trunks and other wood, such as the lignin-rich fernlike plants known as arborescent lycophytes, now extinct. Previous explanations largely argued that such coal formation was a result of the Carboniferous's swampy conditions?after lignin-rich plants fell into these swamps, they simply were buried rather than broken down by fungi or microbes and turned to peat and then coal over geologic time frame. "They're not mutually exclusive," Hibbett notes, although more of the easily overlooked fungal fossils would need to be found to determine the truth.

How exactly white rot breaks down lignin remains unknown. The fungi releases reactive molecules and enzymes that seemingly tear the plant-protecting compound apart via "brute force," in the words of Hibbett. Once the protective lignin is out of the way, the white rot fungi feast on the cellulose, which comprises more digestible plant sugars. And subsequent evolution has given so-called brown rot fungi the means to work around lignin without attacking it directly. "They have evolved a way to get at cellulose and leave the lignin behind," Hibbett says, which results in the crumbly, brown logs littering temperate forests today?potentially coal in the distant future.

United Technologies, subsidiaries to pay $75 million for sending parts for Chinese helicopter

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. ? ?A division of United Technologies Corp. pleaded guilty on Thursday to crimes related to the illegal export of software that U.S. officials say was used by China to develop the country's first modern military attack helicopter.

The subsidiary, Pratt & Whitney Canada Corp.; Hartford-based UTC; and another subsidiary along with UTC agreed to pay more than $75 million in fines in connection with the export violations and for providing misleading information to the U.S. government.

The U.S. attorney for Connecticut, David Fein, said Pratt & Whitney Canada knowingly committed the violations because it wanted to become the exclusive supplier for a helicopter market in China with projected revenues of up to $2 billion.

"PWC exported controlled U.S. technology to China, knowing it would be used in the development of a military attack helicopter in violation of the U.S. arms embargo with China," Fein said.

The prosecution is one of the largest resolutions of export violations with a major defense contractor in the Justice Department's history, Fein said at a news conference after the court hearing. Authorities said the case sends a clear message that willful violators of U.S. arms control export regulations will be punished.

"As today's case demonstrates, the Justice Department will spare no effort to hold accountable those who compromise U.S. national security for the sake of profits and then lie about it to the government," Assistant Attorney General Lisa Monaco said.

UTC said it has taken substantial action to ensure the violations won't happen again.

"Export controls are an integral part of safeguarding U.S. national security and foreign policy interests," UTC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Louis Chenevert said in a statement. "As a supplier of controlled products and technologies to the Department of Defense and other domestic and international customers, we are committed to conducting business in full compliance with all export laws and regulations. We accept responsibility for these past violations and we deeply regret they occurred."

The United States has barred the export of defense articles to China since 1989.

Beginning in the 1990s, China sought to develop its attack helicopter under the guise of a civilian program to secure Western assistance, according to U.S. authorities. Pratt & Whitney Canada delivered development engines to China for what become the Z-10, China's first military attack helicopter, in 2001 and 2002 after determining on its own that the engines did not require an export license because they were identical to engines already supplied to China for a commercial helicopter, officials said.

U.S. authorities say the electronic engine control software, however, required a U.S. export license because it was modified for a military helicopter application. Authorities say the Canadian subsidiary had six versions of the military software, made by UTC subsidiary Hamilton Sundstrand, sent to China in 2002 and 2003.

Pratt & Whitney Canada pleaded guilty to violating the Arms Export Control Act and making false statements in connection with the illegal export of software.

The fine to be paid by UTC, Pratt & Whitney Canada and Hamilton Sundstrand is part of a settlement with the U.S. Justice Department and the U.S. State Department. As much as $20 million can be suspended if UTC applies to remedial compliance efforts.

UTC also was charged with making false statements to the government related to belated disclosures of the illegal exports, but authorities agreed not to prosecute that charge provided the company complies with an agreement that includes an independent monitor who will assess the company's compliance with export laws for the next two years.

United Technologies also settled 576 civil charges with the State Department, including more than 800 exports in violation of the Arms Export Control Act from the mid-1990s to last year, officials said.
