Writing Again

Hello everyone,
So I haven't been on this site in a while and I haven't written much lately, but I'm trying to change both of those and so far the writing has gone well. I picked up writing five or six years ago and have 430 poems to show for it. One of the things I hope to do is one day publish a book, but first I need to get over my fear of putting my poems out there since they are my diary and my life. So, I decided to post some more on this website, I have two posted somewhere on here but that was from a long time ago. I would love feedback, honest even if it is harsh because I don't even like all the things I've written though I do hope you like most of them anyway :) Here's one of my more recent ones:Untitled
I wrote this the other day for my boyfriend, who lives 15 hours away

I know I've said it before,
But I'm saying it once more
I'll say it a million times,
About how you, I do adore

Though we're separated,
We're only physically apart
The distance is only seen,
Not felt in my heart

There, you're still with me,
Where you'll always remain
And I promise you this,
My feelings are anything but plain

They're elaborate and strong,
And all for you
They grow every day,
And are truer than true

I miss you ____,
And I love you so
Though I'm not there,
My heart will never let you go

Mel Gibson likely won't testify at deputy's trial (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? A judge says she is inclined to block Mel Gibson from testifying during the workplace discrimination trial of the deputy who arrested the Oscar-winner for drunken driving.

Superior Court Judge Barbara Scheper tentatively ruled Tuesday that the deputy's case shouldn't focus on Gibson's arrest or his anti-Semitic remarks at the time.

Deputy James Mee, who is Jewish, claims he suffered religious discrimination by superiors after arresting Gibson in 2006 and that he was ordered to remove the actor-director's inflammatory rants from a report.

Scheper also says she won't allow Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca to testify during the case unless there is some evidence he ordered actions against Mee.

Scheper will make final rulings on Feb. 14 and jury selection is scheduled to begin later next week.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says the U.S. has a "very good estimate" of when Iran could complete work on a nuclear weapon.

However, Obama says there are still many unanswered questions about the internal dynamics in Iran, including who in the Islamic republic is making decisions.

Obama says the U.S. has done extensive planning and preparation on all potential options for combatting Iran's nuclear program. While the White House says no options are off the table when it comes to dealing with Iran, Obama says he still wants to solve the conflict through diplomacy.

Obama spoke during an interview with NBC.

Marketing Your Self-Published Book: What's Holding You Back ...

By Maggie Klee Lichtenberg

What is it about promotion that?s distasteful to you, that holds you back from moving forward? To help push past inertia, let?s look at ten sample marketing initiatives, then see if you can say Yes to three of them.

But first, no matter who is publishing the book ? a traditional press, a print-on-demand operation (POD), or your own new small company ? remember that you have to do the lion?s share of the marketing. There is no way around this. However, the good news is that you are the best spokesperson for your book. You have lived with, and know, the material deeply. You are your book?s champion. After months of writing and rewriting, you long to get this book out into the world. So, carpe diem! Grab the chance to share your book!

1. Open up. I?ve said this before and I?ll say it again. Start with one change you simply must make if you plan to be successful marketing your book: Get over being shy.

2. Join a local Toastmasters group. Set a goal to become more comfortable with public speaking. Toastmasters programs (or an equivalent) can be incredibly supportive for anyone who fears public speaking.

3. Ramp up your web presence. How well is your website serving you? What initiatives are you taking to draw your niche community of potential book buyers to you? What are you blogging about? Which online groups are you active with?

4. Use article marketing. Using complete or partial standalone chapters from your book, saturate your potential market with repackaged, repurposed, readymade content. And don?t forget to use Google Alerts ? a free service ? to track where your articles are showing up.

5. Create a downloadable media kit on your website. The contents should mirror an actual press kit. This will cost you one tenth as much as a formal printed set of press materials would, yet your kit will be instantly available to the media 24/7.

6. Post comments on others? blogs. Don?t want to take precious time to blog? Post relevant comments on blogs conversing on your book?s niche category, and respectfully work in your web address and bio items about yourself and your book.

7. Influence where your ideal reader will find you. Make a list of 15 to 20 venues where interest in your topic would attract customers to your speaker presentations.

8. Explore the programs of national wholesalers and distributors. How do you get in, and what is their discount policy? How broad a distribution of your books are you looking for? First study each distributor?s website, then set up a live chat or phone call with the customer service rep.

9. Lay out a realistic marketing budget, and consider options. What sources will the money be coming from? What initiatives will you take over, and what can you delegate to a trustworthy part-timer? Is hiring a publicist desirable in your case to get the word out? Identify and set aside a sum of money for six months of promotion initiatives.

10. Prepare galleys for review and media pitches. Do you want to plan your pub date in advance so you have a shot at the important prepublication review media? Explore where getting reviews will significantly impact sales and where they will not.

There are many more marketing actions you can include in a marketing plan. There?s no single correct set of choices to make. My best recommendation is to select what?s most comfortable (and therefore most doable) first, just to get your feet wet. You will be inspired by your accomplishments and more self-starting initiatives will follow. What three in this list appeal to you to get started?

Dealing With Head Lice (HealthDay)

SUNDAY, Feb. 5 (HealthDay News) -- Although there is a stigma associated with having head lice, infestations with these small insects are common and nothing to be ashamed of, according to Dr. Hannah Chow-Johnson, a pediatrician at Loyola University Health System.

Chow-Johnson knows from firsthand experience. Her own kids came home with lice one day.

"There is no shame in having lice. In fact, they are attracted to clean, shiny hair so the assumption that only unclean people have lice is false," said Chow-Johnson, also an assistant professor of pediatrics at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, in a university news release. "I had treated kids with lice in clinic, but it wasn't until my own kids brought those scratchy, nasty bugs into our house that I truly understood their impact."

The size of a grain of rice, lice lay small whitish or brownish eggs called nits that stick to hair shafts about an inch or two from the scalp. Although they can't jump or fly, lice can be spread from person to person through close contact, such as hugging or sleeping in the same bed. They can also be spread when people with an infestation share their hats, clothes or hairbrushes.

There are ways parents can prevent a lice infestation, Chow-Johnson advised. "Try checking your child's hair once a week. It's inconvenient but it's far easier to deal with lice early on than after the bugs have been there for a month." She recommended that parents take the following steps when checking for lice:

  • Sit children down by a sink filled with warm water and comb their hair into sections using a fine-tooth comb.
  • Spray water or nit spray on a small section of hair and pull the comb straight through to the ends.
  • Rinse the comb and wipe it off with a towel.
  • Repeat this process until all the hair on the child's head has been checked.

"It's not enough to do a quick visual by parting your child's hair. Lice move very quickly and evade your best efforts," Chow-Johnson said.

She pointed out that lice do not transmit disease, but they do need blood to survive. She added that infestations with head lice can cause itchiness (especially behind the ears and the nape of the neck) and bumps on the neck. People with lice could also feel movement in the scalp.

Head lice must be treated effectively to prevent the insects from returning. Hot showers and strong shampoo are not going to get rid of the problem. Parents who find lice or nits should treat everyone in the house and wash all bed linens and towels in hot water. Anything that can't be washed should be sealed in a plastic bag for at least 72 hours. Car seats, backpacks and jackets must also be treated, Chow-Johnson pointed out.

Nits typically hatch in eight to nine days, grow to maturity and mate to produce more nits. So, it's not enough to target the live lice, she warned. Nits must also be killed, so choose over-the-counter treatment products that will do both.

"After having lice your child will be more susceptible to it for six weeks, so I suggest continuing to use the anti-lice products for those weeks and continue to check daily for lice and nits," Chow-Johnson noted.

Mango, rosemary and tea tree oil repel lice, she added. Using products with these scents can help prevent an infestation. Daily nit and lice-repellent sprays also are available.

"Be vigilant! Early discovery will save you a lot of time and energy. And in this instance other parents will be grateful your child didn't share," Chow-Johnson said.

Can A Small Business Survive Online With A DIY Mindset? | Small ...

The business world can be brutal, and the online business world is even more so. Name me a product and a price and I daresay I could find a handful of offers that beat yours either on price, service or reputation. That doesn?t mean the millions of shoppers who search online could, though a fair proportion of them will. Are you a small business owner who is trying to survive online by doing it all yourself? There is a good chance your business is going downhill, and possibly your health as well.

There is only so much a person can do. You have a choice, you can work on the periphery of your business, managing a website, keywords, content, marketing including a social media marketing campaign, and perhaps even a PPC campaign as well ? and we haven?t touched on the business side of things, the stock control, money management and growth of a business. The alternative is to work longer building your business, increasing turnover and profitability.? There are some small business owners who can manage this full time, however, their stress levels are high and their interaction with family and friends low.

The alternative is to engage professionals to work on specific areas of your business.? Are they expensive? Despite popular opinion, generally not ? although expensive depends on your own personal opinion. There are very competent web designers, content writers, marketing consultants and SEO professionals, just to name a few, who can help you build your business.? The key to their success is your ability to let go.

We can often identify one common trait amongst those who insist on a DIY approach to an online presence ? they really do go it alone. The best recommendation we can make is to stop ? and network. You don?t have to give away business secrets, although you?ll be surprised with what you?ll learn once you start networking, and that includes reliable information on who best to engage to help with your online presence.

Small businesses with a DIY mindset often fail, or at best, remain static and fail to grow.? The time will come when your?business will need a professionally produced website, aggressive SEO, and perhaps a strong marketing (particularly social media marketing) campaign to survive in this brutal online world. Networking is one approach to breaking the DIY cycle, and to obtaining information that will help your business grow ? are you networking? Are you doing it all yourself? It?s time you broke free and found professional help for your online business.

Deported Texas teen maintains alias in jail calls (AP)

DALLAS ? A Dallas teenager who was deported to South America under a false name never expressed concern during jailhouse phone calls that she was being misidentified as an illegal immigrant from Colombia.

The more than two dozen recorded telephone calls reviewed by The Associated Press show 15-year-old Jakadrien Turner expected to be deported to Colombia yet did not complain of having no ties to the country.

Instead, during several conversations she had with two men she identified herself as Tika Lanay Cortez and discussed renewing her green card and having her passport and Colombian identification card sent to authorities.

Yet, Turner claimed in a recent TV interview that she repeatedly tried to convince authorities she had lied when she initially identified herself to Houston police as Cortez, a 21-year-old Colombian national, after being arrested for shoplifting.

"At a certain point, I just gave up because I said it multiple times: `I'm Jakadrien Turner, I'm 15 years old, and why am I here?'" Turner, who was returned to Texas last month, told Dallas television station WFAA, in an interview that aired Wednesday night.

The Associated Press reviewed recordings of 25 telephone calls Turner made while in custody in Houston in April and May. A law enforcement official who has listened to most of the calls and has been briefed on the case confirmed the caller is Turner. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official is not authorized to publicly discuss details of the case.

During several of the phone calls, which ranged from a couple minutes to about 45 minutes, Turner frequently discusses having her passport and other documents sent so she could be released.

The teen, who said she ran away from home in November 2010 because her parents were strict, told the TV station she fell in with a trafficker who claimed to love her but threatened to kill her and hurt her family if she tried to leave.

Her Dallas attorney, Ray Jackson, told the Associated Press on Friday that the individuals Turner was calling on the phone were people she met after she escaped the trafficker ? in the week or two before her arrest.

One of them may have had family in Colombia, he said, explaining the South American connection.

"Essentially, what she's trying to do is get them to help her get out," Jackson said. "The purpose of the calls, some of them, was to try to get bond money.

"She wasn't going to call them and say, `Hey, guess what? I'm a 15-year-old girl." She continued using Tika Cortez, the name she made up, because that was how they knew her, he said, adding that she was resigned to the fact that she might be deported and felt hopeless.

"You've got to keep in mind that we're still dealing with a 15-year-old girl," Jackson said. "She was a month from being 14. So you're talking about someone who is very immature mentally. So she was confused by that whole situation."

Jackson said Turner endured some "horrific things" as a runaway, physically and mentally abused by the trafficker.

But after she was in custody ? and supposedly free of the trafficker ? she continued using her alias, said an attorney who represented her in the theft case.

"As far as I can tell, she was always listed as Tika Cortez," said William Rene McLellan, her Houston defense attorney.

McLellan said that given the pretrial proceedings and that she was told of the immigration hold, "there was ample opportunity for her to change her story. It's mind-boggling she would go with it."

McLellan noted Turner pleaded guilty, was sentenced to eight days with three days' credit and turned over to immigration.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say Turner never identified herself as an American citizen.

Though there are times in the recorded jailhouse phone calls when Turner laments being incarcerated, she is generally upbeat and often jokes with the two men.

In a lengthy call April 9 with one of the men, Turner tells him she expects to be deported to Colombia but if she does go, "I'm coming back."

She never tells the man she is a U.S. citizen or complains that she has no ties to Colombia. The only thing she complains about is the security situation in that country.

"So this is what scares me though ... if I get deported, basically I don't know how I am going to go to Colombia because it's a war zone," she says.

Turner was sent to South America, where she remained until Jan. 6, after Dallas police, working with her grandmother, tracked her down using her Facebook page.

WFAA reported she was afraid that if she told the truth in Colombia that she would be imprisoned there.

"I made a lot of horrible mistakes, did a lot of things I'm not proud of," she told the station.

Turner says no one in Houston would believe her when she did tell the truth about who she was.

"It's like the story of the boy that cried wolf," Turner said. "I've lied multiple times before. I've never been honest. I've made a lot of stories up. I made the name up `Tika Cortez.'"

Jackson said he is planning to file a wrongful deportation lawsuit for a violation of Turner's constitutional rights, possibly against the Houston Police Department, ICE, Homeland Security and Colombia.

U.S. immigration officials insist they followed procedure and found nothing to indicate that the girl wasn't a Colombian woman living illegally in the country.

Turner was issued travel documents at the request of U.S. officials using information they provided, the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Turner implies that both she and U.S. authorities are to blame.

"I think a lot of people say things to try to cover themselves up," she said. "I made the choices I made, and officials, they made the choices they made."

Media Misdirect: Donald Trump Endorses Romney for President (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | In what was either a political double-cross or a media misdirect of some sort, business mogul Donald Trump announced Thursday that he was endorsing Mitt Romney for president. Much of the media, including outlets like the Associated Press, had been reporting that sources from within the Gingrich campaign had indicated that the celebrity businessman would soon announce an endorsement of their candidate.

Talk about getting juked out of your shoes...

At an impromptu news conference in Las Vegas, as reported by CBS News, Trump told the gathering of reporters, " Mitt is tough, he's smart, he's sharp, he's not going to allow bad things to continue to happen to this country that we all love...So Governor Romney, go out and get 'em, you can do it."

He further noted that Romney seemed to be the only candidate to notice how the country was getting "ripped off" by those that it dealt with and how Romney recognized how OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) and China were " absolutely destroying this country."

But what about supporting Newt Gingrich? When asked about reports that he was to throw his support behind the former Speaker, Trump said, "They put that out." He insisted that he never told anyone he was backing Gingrich.

But what about the sources? The National Journal noted that they had confirmed the Gingrich endorsement through Gingrich sources that wish to remain anonymous.

Good thing, considering that their employer has been left without a Trump endorsement.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that sources within the Gingrich camp had confirmed the Trump endorsement.

The Associated Press also ran with the Gingrich endorsement story Wednesday evening. Up until Trump's press conference, many thought Gingrich had the businessman's endorsement sewn up.

The good news for Republicans might not be in the endorsement itself, but in the Trump announcement that if Romney went on to win the Republican nomination in August, he would not run as a third party candidate. An independent candidacy, at least from the Republican Party perspective, could spell certain defeat in November, drawing away conservative voters that would most likely vote for the Republican candidate if the independent contender had not entered the race. Of course, leaving the spectre of a Trump candidacy in the cards should Gingrich get the nomination might also sway some undecided voters away from Gingrich as well.

So which was it? Just a bunch of reporters getting their stories wrong or someone misdirecting the media, such as Trump himself (known for manipulating the media and finding ways to keep himself in the spotlight, especially when his television show, "Celebrity Apprentice," is due to begin a seasonal run). Could there have been a political double-cross, one where certain things were said, perhaps promised, then removed from consideration?

Many scenarios are possible, but it is difficult to see campaign staffers and/or officials within the Gingrich organization confirming endorsement stories without some solid reason for doing so. Politics being what they are, politicians and the people that work for them are usually very circumspect when confirming endorsements and do not base their "leaked" information, even if given anonymously, on wishful thinking.

And a complete media misdirect with an endorsement made in the City of Sin, in the land of big deals and bigger gambles, seems all about presentation and not at all about substance.

Something that has been said about Donald Trump all too often.

Besides, the new season of "Celebrity Apprentice" begins in two weeks.

The Journey Must Go on | David Mansaray

Road Ahead

If you tried to visit this blog sometime in? the last few weeks you would have seen a screen that? read? ?I?ll be back?.? I also deactivated my account on Facebook, and (temporarily) took all of my videos off of YouTube.? I didn?t give a heads up, just like that, I disappeared from the web.

Why Did I do This?

At the ending of last year I took some time to review all my writing and videos on the web.? I realised something which at first was shocking: much of my writing and videos no longer represent the person I am.

Last year I travelled extremely far on my journey of growth and I?m happy with the ground? I covered.? However,? when I reviewed my videos and writing I felt uneasy with having an older version of myself floating around.

If you ever meet me in person, no? matter when,? you?ll be meeting the latest version of myself; there?s no way of meeting the old me because that version is always deleted.

However, thing work differently on the net?

The Internet Freezes Time

We all have this big brother Google who knows where everything is on the net; whenever we want to find something, we ask, and he tells us where to go.

The majority of people find me through Google, and It?s probably how you found me, right?

I?m fortunate to live in an age where people can? find my work by typing a few words. All I have to do is continue to add value to this huge database.

The alarm bells started to ring in my head when I realised Google was sending a lot of people to my old work, which was created by a now extinct version of myself.? This troubled me and I started thinking of ways to handle the situation.

I figured I had been publishing content for the web for one year and it was probably ok if I started again.

The idea seemed promising;? I would delete my whole archive of content and start again from a blank slate. I went over the idea a million times and decided to shut my blog for a few weeks to reflect.

Everything Must Stay

I learnt last year that Ideas often aren?t as good they first seem.

I?m happy I didn?t make a rash decision because spending a few short weeks away was enough to realise it was a bad idea. I?ve changed in many ways but my mission is still the same:

To inspire people to live better lives through my action, writing and speaking; to help people become the best version of themselves by demonstrating ?the power of constantly exploring and learning.

Writing and speaking? can be extremely powerful, however, I find these mediums most moving when they are grounded in experience;? with this in mind, I realised? a more effective way to achieve my mission is to keep all my cards on the table, to show my trials and tribulations and to leave a trail that goes back to the very beginning.

I now feel great pleasure knowing that one day I?ll be able to send people 5, 10 or 20 years back in time to look at my journey of growth. Assuming I?ll continue to grow as I am, I can?t think of a better way to show someone they can do the things they want to do.

The journey must go on!

I?m grateful you?ve decided? to join me? me on my journey of growth. Hopefully I can inspire you to live a? better life through my actions, writing and speaking.
