Returning to her Roots | Zion Lutheran Church

Kia Prell was Kia Swaggert when she was baptized and confirmed at Zion. She went off to college at Concordia in Moorhead, lived in Cambridge, Saint Paul and Eagan, and was a member of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. Ten years after graduating from Buffalo High School she moved back to Buffalo with her own family and again joined Zion.

Kia and Brandon have been married for 9 years. They live in Buffalo with their children; Kallen is 6, Mira is 3 and Stanton is 8 months. They enjoy being outside, going to high school sporting events and getting together with other families. Kia teaches Family and Consumer Sciences (Home Economics) at St. Michael Albertville High School.

Since returning to Zion, Kia has been involved with Food for Friends, Harvest of Hands, the Lutefisk Supper, and as a substitute Sunday school teacher. She has also taught some parent education classes through ECFE (Early Childhood and Family Education).

Recently, Pastor Luke asked Kia to be involved with the Fellowship Committee, and after attending her first meeting she is enthusiastic about plans the committee is making.

?I have always wanted to be more involved with church, but having young children at home makes it hard to find time. I thought that being involved with the Fellowship Committee right now would work well with our family. The Fellowship Committee is all about making connections with people. Even though we have been members for years, I still feel like I don?t know a ton of people. I want to help others (including myself) get to know each other.?

Pastor Luke encouraged Fellowship Committee members to take the lead in getting some small groups started. Kia realized that starting a small group was a good fit for her, and after considering her passions Kia is now planning a new ministry at Zion, the Family Matters Parenting Group.

?I don?t have time for hobbies, so I came to the conclusion that my ?hobbies? are my children. I want to be the best parent I can be and I like learning about parenting. I know that there are a lot of parents out there that feel the same way. By having a parenting group, we can collaborate about our parenting strategies.?

The Family Matters Parenting Group will begin meeting on February 20.
