Tsuji Heavy Starts Works on World?s First LNG-powered Cargo

Tsuji Heavy Industries Jiangsu shipyard, on August 28th, started the construction works on one of the world?s first LNG-powered sea-going cargo vessel. The two Rolls-Royce NVC 405 cargo vessels will be built at the Tsuji?s Jiangsu shipyard in China. The vessels will enter service from October 2013, operating along the West Coast of Norway.

Rolls-Royce designed, Environship concept is award-winning, highly efficient ship that incorporates a striking wave piercing bow, world leading gas powered engines and an innovative Promas propulsion system.

The Environship concept increases fuel efficiency by up to 18 per cent and? provides numerous environmental benefits, including the virtual elimination of SOx and reduction of CO2 emissions by more than 40 per cent compared to similar conventional vessels.

Key facts about the Environship

  • The Rolls-Royce Environship concept, received the prestigious Next Generation Ship Award at this year?s NorShipping event in Oslo, Norway.
  • The Rolls-Royce Bergen B-Series lean burn gas engines, as used in the Environship, emit around 17 per cent less CO2 (per unit of power) than a diesel engine.
  • The use of gas fuelled engines means that Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions are reduced by about 90 per cent while Sulphur Oxide (SOx) emissions are negligible.
  • These emissions are already within the limits of IMO (International Maritime Organisation) Tier III environmental legislation, due to come into force in 2016.
  • The Rolls-Royce Promas propulsion system is an integrated rudder and propeller, which alone improves efficiency of the vessel by 5 to 8 per cent.
  • The new innovative bow shape and hull form, designed by Rolls-Royce, also reduce resistance by up to 8 per cent, therefore reducing fuel burn and emissions further.
  • The vertical bow shape enables the vessel to maintain speed even in rough seas enabling operators to achieve demanding shipping schedules without the need to burn additional fuel to make up lost time.

Watch advertisements for free game time | Lazygamer .:: Console ...

Square Enix goes free-to-play with classic Hitman and Tomb Raider titles, but at the cost of your sanity.

The publisher launched a new cloud gaming portal, Core Online which will bring things dear to our hearts such as microtransactions and advertisements to Hitman: Blood Money and Tomb Raider: Underworld. What kind of trickery is this?

Every game on the service has been divided into designated chapters where gamers can pay $0.49 (R4.15) to play each chapter or can choose to watch advertisements for free game time. For every minute of advertisement watched, you?ll get 20 minutes of free game time and keep renewing it, if you haven?t lost your mind by then, by watching some more adds.

Gamers can alternatively choose to skip the process of add watching and just buy the games for $4.99 (R42.24). At launch Core Online will only support the Hitman: Blood Money and Mini Ninja?s titles, although Square Enix has said that games like Tomb Raider: Underworld, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Gyromancer will launch on the service in the months to come.

Sony VAIO Duo 11 slider PC hands-on (video)

Sony VAIO Duo 11 slider PC handson

While Sony's keeping quiet on a lot of the precise technical specs, there's plenty to talk about in the form-factor Sony has chosen for one of its debut Windows 8 VAIO devices. The Duo 11 slider pairs an 11.6-inch screen with a sliding -- and very satisfying -- hinge. This gives the slate two different ways to deal with Microsoft's forthcoming OS. Handily, Sony has also developed a precise digitizer to work in tandem with the device. We're liking the style of the slider, and that petite footprint is also rather appealing -- aside from the paucity for keys. There are more impressions and a hands-on video after the break.

Microsoft Opens Registration For Imagine Cup 2013, Doubles Prize Money to $300K

Microsoft has organized its Imagine Cup student technology competition for the last 10 years and today, the company opened registration for the 2013 edition of this event. Students ages 16 and older can now register for their national events and the winners of these local event will be flown to St. Petersburg, Russia, where they worldwide finals will take place from July 8 to 11. For this edition of Imagine Cup, Microsoft has doubled the prize money to $300,000.

Microsoft also reorganized the competition around three new core areas: world citizenship, games and innovation. Previously, the flagship event was the software design competition, which a group of Ukrainian students won this year after developing gloves that can translate sign language into speech.

Since the first Imagine Cup in 2003, says Microsoft, over 1.65 million students across the globe have participated in Imagine Cup and a number of the teams that made it to the finals (and many that have not) went on to create startups afterwards. 2011 finalist Team OaSys from Jordan, for example, is currently working on bringing its system that allows quadriplegics to control a computer to market. To help the finalists commercialize their ideas, Microsoft also allows them to apply for its three-year, $3 million Imagine Cup Grants.

Here is Microsoft?s description of the new core competitions:

  • World Citizenship: Honors the software application developed on Microsoft platforms with the greatest potential to make a positive impact on humanity. For example, a project might address education-, social- or healthcare-related problems.
  • Games: Honors the most engaging and entertaining games targeting teens and youth, built on Microsoft platforms (Windows 8, Windows Phone, Kinect for Windows Software Development Kit, and Xbox Indie Games).
  • Innovation: Honors apps that give consumers inspiration and innovation at their fingertips, whether it be a new spin on social networks, online shopping or search, built with Microsoft tools and technology.

The winners of each of these competitions will get $50,000.

In addition to the core competitions, students can also compete in a number of online challenges focused on specific technologies and platforms, including Windows 8, Windows Azure and Windows Phone.

Guest Post: Step 9 ? Nurture Happiness and Foster Resilience ...

By?Janine Kovac

When my husband and I first found out that we had a high-risk twin pregnancy?with 50/50 odds that we would lose the twins?I realized that my current set of coping skills and strategies were inadequate. I couldn?t just sit back and ?hope for the best? and I couldn?t wish for a different kind of pregnancy or a different kind of life; I needed a way to accept my current situation and if possible, even learn to enjoy it. I turned to Christine Carter?s work with the Greater Good Science Center, specifically the Raising Happiness blog and her book Raising Happiness?with occasional insights that I pulled from cognitive science.

We started with by taking care of ourselves first and by building our social support. When our boys were born in December instead of April (when they were due), we found comfort in our growth mindsets. In my last guest post, ?Step 8: Enjoy the Present Moment,? the twins were home and healthy and I was wondering if the metaphors I used for time?make time, spend time, lose time?were actually affecting my ability to manage my days with less stress and more joy.

Step 9 from Raising Happiness (?Rig Their Environment for Happiness?) presents the paradox that parents are faced with. On the one hand, we want to raise our children in an environment that maximizes their potential for a joyful life (and chapters 1 through 8 provide concrete ways to do this). At the same time, we can?t stick our children in a bubble with the hopes that nothing bad will happen to them.

To address the step, I had intended to write about the twins coming home after three months in the newborn intensive care unit (the NICU) and how we worried our way through the first year. We had weekly meetings with infant-development specialists and monthly medical appointments that monitored the twins? delayed development. I wanted to capture the essence of the paradox that Christine describes in her chapter: while there are definite steps we can take to positively impact our children?s happiness and resilience, our control over our children?s environment is limited. I had the post all mapped out.

But then my husband?s dad died.

A few years ago my father-in-law had been diagnosed with a rare and stubborn form of cancer. This past Christmas we came to understand that his options for further treatment were limited. Over Easter my father-in-law entered into hospice care.

After spending spring break with her grandparents, my five-year-old daughter asked me,
?Is Grandpa going to get better??

?No,? I had to tell her.

?Is Grandpa going to die??

?Yes,? I had to tell her.

Here it was, in a spontaneous conversation with my daughter: the reason I needed Chapter 9. We can model a growth mindset for our children. We can practice gratitude and optimism as a family. We can have happiness routines that foster healthy living. But Grandpa?s cancer is terminal.

?I have some books for you,? the director of my daughter?s preschool told me when she heard the news. She sent me home an armful of books from the center?s lending library. They had titles such as: When Someone You Love Has Cancer: A Guide to Help Kids Cope and I?ll Hold You and You?ll Hold Me.

?I wish I didn?t have a need for such an extensive collection,? she sighed.

One book in particular, When Dinosaurs Die: A Guide to Understanding Death, became an instant favorite with my daughter.

?Losing someone who is special to you is very hard to understand,? the book stated simply. And: ?When someone you love dies, there is no right or wrong way to feel.?

Every page depicted cartoon scenes of life and death: the burial of a pet, a sick parent, a car accident, a memorial service for the Grandpa dinosaur (?Morris Saurus.?)? There was even a cartoon panel with two little baby dinosaur ?preemies? hooked up to tubes and wires in little incubators.

?Just like the boys!? my daughter exclaimed, recognizing the NICU equipment even in dinosaur cartoons. We talked about how the boys were healthy now, but that they were very little and sick when they were born.

?We should give this book to Grandma,? she said one night after we read it for what seemed like the fortieth time. ?So she won?t be so sad about Grandpa.?

As I was leaving for the airport to attend the memorial, my daughter reminded me, ?Did you pack the dinosaur book for Grandma??

On the night after the funeral, friends and family came to the house to remember the man who had been uncle, brother, father, neighbor, and grandfather, among so many other roles. We cried. We laughed. We ordered pizza and watched Grandpa?s favorite movie, an obscure spaghetti Western.

The dinosaur book sat on an end table where it happened to catch the attention of some of the younger grandchildren. I watched as one by one, they nabbed the book, curled up in a corner and flipped slowly through various topics such as, ?Why Does Someone Die?? ?Feelings about Death,? and ?Ways to Remember Someone.? None of the children said anything to anyone. They just silently read through the book, each child leaving it on the table where he or she had found it.

The other day (for the purposes of writing this post), I pulled the book out again. When my daughter saw it, she wanted me to read it to her at bedtime. Afterwards, we played the game suggested on one of the last pages: ?I remember when??

?I remember when Grandpa came to visit and read books to you,? I began.

?I remember Grandpa?s birthday party,? she said.

?I remember the cards he used to make for us.?

We did a few more rounds of ?I remember when?? and then I kissed her and turned off the light.

I?m so sad to have lost my father-in-law. And it breaks my heart to know that my sons won?t know him as we knew him?the man who was my husband?s best man at our wedding, the man who sent thank-you candy to the boys? NICU nurses and read doll books to his granddaughter.

But while we are sad, we are also grateful that we have friends who recommend books to help us talk about what we?re feeling. We?re proud that our daughter?s sadness prompted her to empathize with Grandma. We?re tickled that a little thing like a book in the right place at the right time can remind us to share the happy memories of our loved ones. That?s the real message behind Chapter 9?that the tools we use to nurture happiness are the same ones we use to foster resilience.

Will.i.am's "Reach For The Stars" Becomes First Song Broadcast From Mars

Will.i.am has made music history in the most unusual of ways.

One of his songs - appropriately called "Reach For the Stars" - was played back by NASA's Mars Curiosity rover as part of a collaboration between the national space agency and the Black Eyed Peas rapper's educational i.am.angel Foundation.

As such, it became the first song ever played from Mars!

will.i.am - Reach For The Stars (Mars Edition)

With no speakers on the rover, however, the track was sadly not played on the red planet itself ... all the UFOs on Mars really missed out.

Aurora victims' families slam relief fund

Families of victims of the Aurora Colorado movie shooting held a press conference? expressing anger over how millions of dollars raised through donations and fundraisers have been dispersed.

By Sam Schulz, NBC News

The families of victims of the Colorado movie theater massacre said Tuesday at an emotionally charged news conference that although a fund intended to help them had raised more than $5 million, they had been shut out of the decision-making process.

Family members in Aurora, Colo., tearfully?decried what they called state officials' and the Colorado Organization for Victim Assistance's lack of leadership and organization. They accused fundraisers of failing to give them a voice in determining what to do with the money already donated to the fund, despite using photographs of the victims in their fundraising efforts.

Group spokesman Tom Teves, whose aspiring psychiatrist son Alex Teves, 24, was killed in the attack, pleaded on behalf of the group for urgent financial help and for more of a role in the process.

?We come to speak as one voice,? Teves said. ?We are here because we want the public to know what has happened within days of the shooting.?

Other victims' relatives said that COVA's disorganization had left them all in the dark about the fund and deprived them of a much-needed sense of community.

"Every desire that we have has to come under a microscope," said the mother of one victim, responding to a question about the particular financial needs of victims' families. Deidra Brooks, whose 19-year-old son Jarell was recovering from his wounds from the July 20 shooting rampage, said that scrutiny had added insult to injury.

"It's more than a slap in the face. It's going through the 20th over and over and over," she said.

Teves said money had been solicited for The Aurora Victim Relief Fund using the names and pictures of those slain. "I am certain that the public intended 100 percent of those donations to go to the families of victims, and to use that money to help the healing process," Teves said. "Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case."

Teves said the families believed the funds would help all the victims, who Teves said included people in the theater or in the shooter?s apartment complex who suffered physically or emotionally.

The 12 who were killed included?18-year-old recent high school graduate AJ Boik, Air Force cyber-systems operator Jesse Childress, aspiring sportscaster Jessica Ghawi, community college student Micayla Medek and mother of two Rebecca Wingo.

Alexander Teves, Matt McQuinn, U.S. Navy veteran Jonathan Blunk and Navy sailor John Larimer all died shielding their friends or girlfriends.

NBC News

Tom Teves speaks at a press conference as other family members of the theater shooting victims look on Tuesday in Aurora, Colo.

The massacre's oldest victim was 51-year-old Gordon Cowden, whose teen children survived it, and its youngest was 6-year-old Veronica Moser-Sullivan, who had just learned to swim. Alex Sullivan, no relation to Veronica Moser-Sullivan, was celebrating his 27th birthday and his first wedding anniversary on the night he was killed.

Watch US News videos on NBCNews.com

The conference came as?lawyers in the murder case against accused gunman James Holmes wrangled?over what should be made public.

Holmes is accused of unleashing the July 20 shooting rampage at an Aurora movie theater. Police say the 24-year-old, wearing body armor and a gas mask and heavily armed, opened fire on an audience of the opening night of "The Dark Knight Rises," killing 12 and injuring 58.

Police apprehended Holmes, who had recently withdrawn as a neuroscience Ph.D student from the University of Colorado, outside the theater and said they later removed explosives from his booby-trapped apartment.

Thanks to a court-imposed gag order, little has been publicly said about the case ? despite the intensity of prosecutors' legal battle with defense lawyers, who maintain Holmes is mentally ill, over access to his university and medical records.

Prosecutors want access to Holmes' school records as well as to the contents of a package he sent to his psychiatrist, Dr. Lynne Fenton. News reports citing anonymous sources indicated that package contained a notebook with writings that reportedly described a violent attack.

Defense lawyers argue the contents of the package are privileged, as Holmes' confidential communication with his doctor, and say Holmes is mentally ill.

In the weeks following the shooting, details of Holmes' past have slowly trickled out but have left victims' families few clues as to a motive.

The New York Times reported?Sunday that weeks before the massacre, Holmes had text messaged a classmate about a psychiatric condition common in patients with bipolar disorder and had warned her to stay away from him, saying, "I am bad news."

Prosecutors said in court filings that in May he had shown another classmate a semiautomatic pistol he had bought "for protection" and that in March he had told another that he wanted to kill people "when his life was over."

A hearing on the question of access to the contents of the package Holmes mailed to Dr. Fenton is scheduled for Thursday, and Fenton is expected to testify.

Stocks mixed in thin trading; oil creeps over $96

NEW YORK (AP) ? Mixed economic data kept the stock market hovering near break-even Tuesday. One report on home prices looked encouraging, and another on consumer confidence was worrisome.

House prices increased in all major U.S. cities in June, according to the closely watched Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home-price index. The report was the latest sign that the housing market has been gaining strength.

"I thought it was terrific," said Phil Orlando, chief equity strategist at Federated Investors. "If you look at all of the key housing metrics over the past year ? affordability, building permits, starts ? all those numbers are pointing in the right direction."

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 21.68 points to close at 13,102.99. Hewlett-Packard led the Dow down. HP's stock lost 31 cents to $16.90 and hit a new one-year low.

Crude oil crept above $96 a barrel as Hurricane Isaac picked up speed in the Gulf of Mexico, where roughly one-quarter of the country's oil is produced. Much of the region's production and refining activity has shut down. The National Hurricane Center forecast that Isaac would reach the coast of southeastern Louisiana late Tuesday.

In other trading, the Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped 1.14 points to 1,409.30, and the Nasdaq composite index gained 3.95 points to 3,077.14.

Trading was light again, typical for August vacation season. Over the past three days, fewer than 7.7 billion shares have been traded, the lowest three-day stretch since December 2011.

The indexes dipped in morning trading after the Conference Board said its consumer confidence index fell to its lowest point since November 2011. Economists had expected a much higher reading. The index was 60.6, down from 65.4 in July.

That unexpected drop bolsters the case for the Federal Reserve to take more steps to spur economic growth, said Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi in New York, in a note to clients.

For economists and investors, the big event this week is Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech at an annual conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Traders will sift through his speech Friday for evidence the Fed is readying more support.

Anyone hoping to hear Bernanke make a strong case for a third round of bond-buying, known as quantitative easing or QE3, is likely to wind up disappointed, said Russ Koesterich, global chief investment strategist for BlackRock's iShares group. "I don't think those investors are going to find what they're looking for."

Recent reports draw a picture of an economy that's just plodding along, he said. It's hardly in perfect health, but it's not so weak that the Fed will be forced into action at the end of its next meeting on Sept. 13.

"It's not clear there's enough evidence to support QE3 yet," Koesterich said.

Worries over Europe resurfaced following news that one of Spain's largest regions, Catalonia, said it will ask the central government for $6.3 billion in rescue aid. Catalonia would be the third Spanish region to ask for help.

Borrowing costs for Spain and Italy jumped, and major stock indexes in Europe closed lower. Germany's DAX dropped 0.6 percent, while France's CAC 40 fell 0.9 percent.

Among other U.S. stocks making big moves:

? Lexmark International jumped 14 percent, the biggest gain in the S&P. Lexmark said that it will stop making ink-jet printers and plans to lay off 1,700 employees, nearly 13 percent of its work force. The company expects to shutter its ink-jet supply plant in the Philippines by the end of 2015. Lexmark's stock gained $2.61 to $21.62.

? The world's top ketchup maker, H.J. Heinz, gained 2 percent. The company's CEO said strong sales in Brazil, Indonesia and other developing countries should help quarterly earnings beat Wall Street's expectations. The Pittsburgh company reports results Wednesday. Its stock rose 95 cents to $57.41.

? Sanderson Farms soared 9 percent after the poultry company swung to a quarterly profit. Higher prices for chicken parts, from boneless breasts to jumbo wings, pushed both profits and revenue above analysts' estimates. Sanderson Farms' stock surged $3.46 to $44.05.

PUNTO FIJO, Venezuela (AP) ? Venezuelans who live next to the country's biggest oil refinery said they smelled a strong odor of sulfur hours before a gas leak ignited in an explosion that killed at least 39 people and injured more than 80.

The Amuay refinery was still burning on Sunday more than a day after the blast, sending up a thick column of black smoke.

Residents in a neighborhood next to the refinery said that starting about 7 p.m. on Friday they noticed the unusually strong odor. Government officials say the blast occurred about 1:15 a.m. on Saturday when the gas leak created a cloud that ignited.

The cause of the disaster is under investigation.

Gabriela Nunez, a housewife who lives near the refinery, said she noticed the gas odor on Friday night and then hours later came the shock wave.

"All the windows shattered, the iron doors opened, the wooden doors broke," Nunez said. She returned to her home on Saturday night to gather belongings, saying she was worried about looters who had stolen goods from nearby stores hours after the explosion.

"That forced us to come back, even though we're afraid, to save what can be saved and secure our houses," Nunez said.

A total of 209 homes and 11 businesses were damaged in the explosion, and a National Guard post next to the refinery was destroyed, Vice President Elias Jaua said late Saturday. He said 18 of the victims were National Guard soldiers.

President Hugo Chavez on Saturday declared three days of mourning in the country.

Amuay is among the world's largest refineries and is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline.

Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said the country has enough fuel in storage, "10 days of inventories," to keep the Venezuelan market fully supplied with gasoline and diesel.

He said fires were still burning in two fuel storage tanks on Sunday but that other "process areas" of the refinery have been otherwise unaffected. Once the flames are completely extinguished, Ramirez said, "we have the ability to restart our refinery in two days."

Hurricane Andrew's Costly Insurance Legacy ? CBS Miami

MIAMI (CBS4) ? Hurricane Andrew was a nightmare for anyone who went through it.

It was a life-changing event that?s not easily forgotten as we mark the 20th anniversary of the day it roared ashore.

South Miami Heights Homeowner Larry Jones remembers.

?We was praying, we was actually praying more so for us, our neighbors, our relatives because we never faced a storm like Hurricane Andrew before,? said Jones.

Falls resident Bobbi Stanley never imaged her neighborhood would be hit so hard.

?You could not recognize the neighborhood. It was just mind boggling. I started to cry, it was horrible, it was really horrible,? said Stanley.

Charles Danger, Miami-Dade?s Director of Building and Neighborhood Compliance Department, said he never imaged the destruction would be so widespread.

?It was like an atomic bomb went off up there. It was an amazing sight from the point of view of complete devastation,? said Danger.

Twenty years later, the bitter legacy of the killer storm still affects us all. More than 28-thousand local homes destroyed, another 107-thousand damaged. As many as 160,000 South Dade residents suddenly found themselves homeless.

Why were so many homes literally blown apart, what went wrong?

Hurricane Andrew brutally exposed a failed system: bad designs, shoddy construction and poor oversight by local inspectors. It was a recipe for disaster.

?We did not build things the way they were supposed to be built according to the code we had. That we were very relaxed in the construction techniques, very relaxed on the inspection techniques, so it was a complete failure, you may say, on the process of construction from the point of designing all the way to the point of inspecting,? said Danger.

With some $26 billion dollars in damage, Hurricane Andrew remains one of the costliest natural disasters in U-S history and we?re still paying the price today in the form of higher homeowners? insurance.

?Twenty years later you?re definitely feeling the effects, definitely. Because we have not been able to fix the problem,? said South Florida insurance industry expert Dulce Suarez-Resnick.

How bad have insurance rates climbed the past 20 years?

The average Miami-Dade homeowner?s policy cost $568 back in 1992. Today, it?s skyrocketed to $3184.

Broward was even less back then at $500, but it now averages $2804.

Stanley remembers the killer storm like it was yesterday. Her insurance bill 20 years ago was $751 dollars. Today, it?s more than $10,000 and she says it?s hurting her family?s financial bottom line.

?It?s outrageous, I don?t know how people can afford it. I mean it?s really, really unbelievable.
I love my house, I always wanted to stay in my house and just recently I said to my husband ?Maybe it?s time that we don?t have a house because it?s just getting prohibitive?,? said Stanley.

When asked if she felt she was being literally being priced out of her home, it didn?t take long for an answer.

?Yes, absolutely and so are a lot of other people. Like so many other south Dade residents who lost their homes, when I rebuilt, I wanted to make sure the roof would stay-on the next time I got hit by a bad storm,? said Stanley. ?I paid extra for storm shutters and other improvements to make my home more storm proof.?

Larry Jones did too.

?We never experienced a Hurricane Andrew and since that time we wanted to make sure if there was another Hurricane Andrew, we?d be able to weather the storm a lot safer,? said Jones.

For a while, Larry?s extra work to improve his home?s construction paid off. He was able to cut his insurance bills by about 30 percent through the state?s windstorm mitigation program which offered discounts for storm shutters and roof improvements.

But following complaints from the industry and heavy lobbying in the Florida legislature, those discounts for older homes, like thousands of Hurricane Andrew re-builds, were basically thrown out.

Larry Jones is not happy about how it?s affected his growing insurance bills.

?Twenty years later you can forget about it, you know what I mean? They came back in and did re-inspections on a home for mitigation just so they can say we?re going to increase your home?s premiums. This really isn?t fair and they?ve made millions and billions of dollars throughout the course of the year.

Industry insiders say fixing the state?s insurance problem requires luring more companies to insure homes here which would increase competition and lower rates.

It also requires a way to lower the cost of the companies? so-called re-insurance expenses, so they can find cheaper ways of underwriting homeowners? policies. There have been discussions of creating a national catastrophe fund to provide affordable coverage for disasters like hurricanes, floods and earthquakes. But state and federal lawmakers remain unable or unwilling to approve any possible fixes.

Suarez-Resnick said state lawmakers have done little to try and solve the problem.

?Twenty years later our premiums are high, 20 years later the state program has less coverage for more premiums and 20 years later we still have a band-aid, there?s no solution as of yet,? said Suarez-Resnick.

Today the state?s biggest insurer, Citizens Property Insurance, is asking to boost rates by another 10 percent for next year?s policies. The head of ?Citizens? recently told CBS4 chief consumer reporter Al Sunshine that he?d like to see a full 30 percent price hike. For the victims of Hurricane Andrew, it?s a bitter reminder 20 years later; the big storm is still haunting them.

?Our elected officials give them all the breaks. You?ve got board members of these insurance companies living very luxurious, there?s nothing wrong with living very luxurious,? said Jones. ?But when it?s on the back of the people that?s an issue. And this is what?s taking place in the State of Florida, it?s on the backs of the people and that?s sad.?

?I don?t see them addressing the issues at all as far as stabilizing it. All I see is them approving more and more increases for the insurance companies,? said Stanley who added that the insurance companies interests are being served at the expense of the consumer.

While homeowners struggle to find affordable insurance two decades after Andrew, industry profits continue to soar. Combined income for private property insurers like State Farm, Allstate and Travelers was about $3.2 billion dollars just for their 2nd quarter profits.

Citizens Insurance is now sitting on more than $6 billion dollars in reserves and continues asking for higher rates.

New non-invasive method for diagnosing epilepsy

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? A team of University of Minnesota biomedical engineers and researchers from Mayo Clinic just published a groundbreaking study that outlines how a new type of non-invasive brain scan taken immediately after a seizure gives additional insight into possible causes and treatments for epilepsy patients. The new findings could specifically benefit millions of people who are unable to control their epilepsy with medication.

The study's findings include:

  • Important data about brain function can be gathered through non-invasive methods, not only during a seizure, but immediately after a seizure.
  • The frontal lobe of the brain is most involved in severe seizures.
  • Seizures in the temporal lobe are most common among adults. The new technique used in the study will help determine the side of the brain where the seizures originate.

"This is the first-ever study where new non-invasive methods were used to study patients after a seizure instead of during a seizure," said Bin He, a biomedical engineering professor in the University of Minnesota's College of Science and Engineering and senior author of the study. "It's really a paradigm shift for research in epilepsy."

Epilepsy affects nearly 3 million Americans and 50 million people worldwide. While medications and other treatments help many people of all ages who live with epilepsy, about 1 million people in the U.S. and 17 million people worldwide continue to have seizures that can severely limit their lives.

The biggest challenge for medical researchers is to locate the part of the brain responsible for the seizures to determine possible treatments. In the past, most research has focused on studying patients while they were having a seizure, or what is technically known as the "ictal" phase of a seizure. Some of these studies involved invasive methods such as surgery to collect data.

In the new study, researchers from the University of Minnesota and Mayo Clinic used a novel approach by studying the brains of 28 patients immediately after seizures, or what is technically know as the "postictal" phase of a seizure. They used a specialized type of non-invasive EEG with 76 electrodes attached to the scalp for gathering data in contrast to most previous research that used 32 electrodes. The researchers used specialized imaging technology to gather data about the patient. The findings may lead to innovative means of locating the brain regions responsible for seizures in individual patients using non-invasive strategies.

"The imaging technology that we developed here at the University of Minnesota allowed us to tackle this research and gather several thousand data points that helped us determine our findings," He said. "The technical innovation was a big part of what helped us make this discovery."

He, who was recently appointed the director of the University of Minnesota's Institute for Engineering in Medicine, said this study was also a good example of a true partnership between engineering and medicine to further medical research.

"The innovations in engineering combined with collaborations with clinicians at Mayo Clinic made this research a reality," He said.

In addition to He, members of the research team included University of Minnesota biomedical engineering Ph.D. student Lin Yang; Gregory A. Worrell, Mayo Clinic, Neurology and Division of Epilepsy; Cindy Nelson, Mayo Clinic, Neurology; and Benjamin Brinkmann, Mayo Clinic, Neurology. The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

How God sees you

A Christian Science perspective.

By Annette Bridges / August 24, 2012

I?m one of those folks who have been captivated by reality television. Well ... at least some of the reality programs.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

But there?s another reality that captures my attention in a much more significant way ? the reality of all things spiritual. I love to ponder in prayer what I believe God knows and sees from His entirely spiritual perspective.

I?ve often thought about the scripture that says that God is of ?purer eyes than to behold evil? (Habakkuk 1:13). I like this concept of God. God who is completely good, perfect, overflowing with pure love and grace. God who is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient.

Many times when I?ve been struggling with some problem, I?ve found it healing and transforming to consider what I believe the God-view is of me ? what I believe the spiritual reality is versus how things look on the surface.

When I?ve felt weak, I?ve found strength in thinking of God?s view of me as strong. When I?ve felt alone and depressed, I?ve been comforted thinking of God?s ever-present arms around me. When I?ve felt uncertain and indecisive, I?ve been calmed with the knowledge that God knows what is best and will guide me in the right direction. When I?ve felt ill, I?ve been restored to health by knowing that God, who is Love, doesn?t send sickness upon His dearly beloved children ? and also by knowing that God, who is omnipotent and good, eliminates evil.

To me this understanding of what God?s view is enabled Jesus to heal multitudes without always knowing the name or type of illness each person in the crowd was experiencing. He only needed to know what God was knowing and seeing. And this God-view healed instantly and completely.

As Mary Baker Eddy wrote: ?Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God?s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick? (?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? pp. 476-477).

Yes, in God?s eyes, we are innocent, active, joyous, peace-filled, healthy, loving, and all the etceteras that God?s children must be as His image and likeness. I find much encouragement in understanding that my Father-Mother God has such a view of me.

Christ Jesus? parable of the prodigal son exemplifies God?s vision of His children (see Luke 15:11-32). It?s a story about two brothers. One is faithful and obedient and fulfills his father?s expectations of him without question or fault. But the other son goes off on his own and does everything he shouldn?t ? until he is penniless and homeless. He finally returns home to ask his father to forgive him and hire him as a servant, feeling he is no longer worthy to be treated as a son.

But when the son faces his father with his apology and declaration, it?s almost as if the father doesn?t even hear him. This father sees only his beloved son returning home safe and well, and he immediately has his servants prepare a feast to honor him.

I love the idea of my Father-Mother God always seeing the best in me. This makes me feel that anything is possible. That it?s never too late. This makes me want to live up to God?s view ? the perfect, spiritual reality. And that makes me feel that I can. We all can.

AileenGilroyIT Sligo has announced that it is allocating ?50,000 under its Sports Scholarships Scheme in a bid to continue its tradition of encouraging excellence in a wide variety of sports.

The deadline for applications for the 2012/2013 academic year is September 28th, 2012.

This year?s impressive roll call of recipients includes Ross Donovan, Captain of the senior Sligo GAA team, senior Donegal player Mark McHugh, Ione Byrne a gold medal winner at the 2012 National Student Surfing Intervarsities hosted by IT Sligo in Strandhill, and Ireland Under 19 soccer international Aileen Gilroy (pictured right).

The 57 students who received sports scholarships for 2011/2012, included 23 first time recipients as well as 34 who had scholarships renewed.

The maximum amount awarded under the scheme is ?1,750 and beneficiaries come from a wide range of sports including?? Soccer (ladies/men), Gaelic Football (ladies/men), Basketball, Athletics, Surfing, Boxing, Camogie, Hurling, Golf and Martial Arts.

IT Sligo has a strong sporting tradition, as President of IT Sligo, Professor Terri Scott, explained: ?We strongly encourage our students to take part in sport, whether it?s for recreational or competitive purposes. Our Sport Scholarship Scheme is an additional support system for students who are serious about achieving in sport. As well as the financial benefits, recognition and status that come with being awarded a scholarship, it provides important peer recognition because it?s a competitive process. Students also benefit from the Institute?s extensive sporting facilities and receive mentoring to help them achieve the best they can in their chosen sport.?

Joe Cox, chairman of the Sports Scholarship Committee said that the Institute has a tradition of fostering excellence across a wide range of sports and because of that reputation was increasingly attracting sports men and women of the highest calibre. ?The bench mark is high and we are finding that talented young people are attracted to IT Sligo when they see our students making a mark at national and county level,? explained Mr Cox.
